Parents supporting a child studying in the UK

A parent supporting a child studying in the UK should review the child’s route and the parent’s own permission separately.

Jurisdiction: United Kingdom.

A parent supporting a child studying in the UK should review the child’s route and the parent’s own permission separately. Child Student arrangements do not automatically allow a parent to live or work in the UK throughout the child’s education.

Check age, care, accommodation and consent requirements. The Parent of a Child Student route has specific conditions and should not be assumed to cover every school-age child.

Identify the child's permission and school arrangement

A child studying at an independent school may qualify for the Child Student route, subject to its age, sponsorship, care and financial requirements. That assessment is separate from whether a parent can accompany the child. Begin with the child's age, school offer, boarding or day arrangements and existing nationality or permission. A British school place does not itself grant either the child or the parent a right to live in the UK. [1]

For siblings, prepare an individual record rather than assuming one route covers everyone. An older child and a younger child can have different practical care arrangements and different effects on the accompanying parent's eligibility. Confirm the education sponsor's requirements for consent, guardianship and accommodation. School admission paperwork and immigration evidence should describe the same intended arrangement.

Check the narrow Parent of a Child Student conditions

The published parent route requires the relevant child to be aged four to eleven when the parent applies and to hold or be applying for Child Student permission, or hold the relevant earlier Tier 4 Child permission. The child must attend an independent school. The parent must be the only accompanying parent, have sufficient funds, maintain their main home outside the UK and intend to leave when permission expires. [2]

The other parent must live abroad and cannot join as a dependant on this route. Other children may accompany the parent only in the circumstances described by the guidance, including their own Child Student applications or permission. Do not market the route as a general family relocation programme. A family wishing both parents to live in Britain needs a separate assessment of lawful options rather than an invitation from the school alone. [2]

Budget without assuming the parent can work

The parent route prohibits paid work, study and starting a business, and does not allow the UK to become the parent's main home. A proposed plan to fund school fees through employment after arrival is therefore inconsistent with the route. Assess how tuition, accommodation, living costs and travel will actually be met while observing the conditions. A remote business arrangement should not be assumed permissible without proper assessment. [2]

Keep the child's financial evidence distinct from the parent's required resources and the household's practical budget. Explain who holds the funds and what support is available. If the plan depends on income from overseas, identify the genuine arrangement and obtain advice where the parent's proposed activities raise questions. Do not describe an intention to work as merely helping a family business to avoid the restriction.

Plan care throughout term time and holidays

Document where the child will live, who will supervise them and what happens during school closures or the parent's absence. A school guardian, host family and accompanying parent may perform different roles. Ensure the arrangement meets the applicable immigration and safeguarding requirements rather than relying on an informal promise from a friend. Keep emergency contacts and consent records current with the school.

If parental responsibility is shared or there are court orders, resolve the authority for the move separately from the visa process. An immigration grant does not override a relocation restriction under family law. Explain any dispute to the appropriate adviser before paying substantial school or accommodation deposits. The child's welfare and lawful care arrangements should remain clear even if the parents' relationship or travel plans change.

Prepare for the parent's permission to end

The guidance limits the parent's stay to the child's visa expiry or the child's twelfth birthday, whichever occurs first. An extension is possible only while the eligibility conditions remain met. If the child continues studying after the parent must leave, suitable ongoing care must be arranged. Do not assume that the child's remaining school years automatically extend the parent's permission or allow switching into a different route from inside the UK. [2]

Through Student application enquiry, ask for an appropriately regulated or otherwise legally authorised adviser to assess the parent and children separately, subject to confirmed scope. Provide ages, school offers, proposed care, finances and the other parent's position. Use Family applications involving dependent children where a different family child route may be relevant. The preparation should produce a timetable for each person and a credible care plan, without promising parental work rights or residence for the full duration of the child's education.

Illustrative scenario

A family plans schooling for two children of different ages. The adviser reviews each child’s position and whether the proposed accompanying parent qualifies for the intended stay.

Preparation checklist

  • Identify each child’s route
  • Check parental eligibility
  • Document care and consent
  • Review the parent’s permitted activities

Frequently asked questions

Can both parents accompany a child on this parent route?

The published route requires one accompanying parent, with the other parent living abroad. Assess any separate immigration options individually.

Can the parent work to pay school fees?

The Parent of a Child Student route prohibits paid work and starting a business. The financial plan must reflect the actual conditions.

Does the parent's permission last until the child finishes school?

No. It ends when the child's visa expires or the child turns twelve, whichever comes first, subject to the actual grant.

Does the school offer resolve relocation consent?

No. Immigration and admission arrangements are separate from parental responsibility, court orders and any required consent.
