English language evidence for a work route

English-language evidence for a work route must meet the requirements applying to the particular application.

Jurisdiction: United Kingdom.

English-language evidence for a work route must meet the requirements applying to the particular application. For relevant new Skilled Worker applications from 8 January 2026, the requirement is B2, with specific exceptions and provisions for earlier qualifying permission.

Check accepted evidence routes before booking a test or relying on a degree. A general English certificate is not automatically an approved immigration evidence route.

Check the English requirement for the exact route and date

English evidence must meet the immigration route's formal requirements, not only the employer's view that the candidate communicates well. For Skilled Worker, the current guidance normally requires level B2 in reading, writing, speaking and listening. A transitional position applies to qualifying people previously granted Skilled Worker permission under the rules before 8 January 2026. Do not apply the former B1 standard to every new application. [1] [2]

Identify whether the person is applying for the first time, extending, updating or switching from another route. Keep earlier grant details where relying on a previous assessment or transitional provision. A prior visa in another category does not automatically settle the current English requirement. Ask an authorised adviser to confirm the applicable rule before booking a test or deciding that no further evidence is needed.

Select an accepted evidence route

The official guidance describes several ways to establish English, including qualifying UK school qualifications, qualifying degrees, approved tests and specified exemptions. Assess the actual qualification and circumstances against the requirements. A general statement that the applicant attended an English-speaking school abroad is not the same as holding a qualification accepted under the relevant provision. [1]

For a UK-awarded degree, confirm the level and language of teaching required by the guidance. Where a degree was awarded outside the UK and taught in English, the official process uses an Ecctis assessment to confirm the relevant equivalence and language evidence. Do not assume that an overseas university's letter alone always replaces that assessment. Keep the reference and supporting qualification records consistent with the applicant's identity.

Check the test before paying or booking

If a Secure English Language Test is needed, use an approved provider and the correct test for the route and required components. A commercially popular English examination is not automatically the appropriate immigration test. Confirm the test centre or delivery arrangements and the evidence reference that the application will require. Leave time for obtaining the result and addressing any genuine administrative discrepancy. [1]

Check the applicable validity and reuse rules for the actual evidence instead of assuming every result expires or remains reusable in the same way. A test taken for a different route may cover a different level or set of skills. The application needs evidence satisfying this requirement, not simply the highest-looking score on a certificate. Our guide to Work visa applications: document consistency explains how to reconcile qualification and application details before submission.

Assess exemptions and professional evidence precisely

Specified nationalities can be exempt from proving English under the route, and certain regulated professionals may rely on an English assessment accepted by the relevant professional body. These are defined provisions, not a general exemption for anyone working in healthcare or anyone whose country uses English in business. Check the official list and professional conditions for the individual. [1]

Where an applicant believes English was already established in an earlier successful application, obtain the previous route and decision details. The current Skilled Worker sponsor guidance distinguishes the B2 rule from the qualifying earlier B1 position. Avoid asking an employee to pay for an unnecessary test, but do not waive evidence solely because a colleague remembers a former rule or the recruitment interview went well. [2]

Make evidence readiness part of the application plan

Assign responsibility for obtaining the result, assessment or exemption evidence and record the expected date. The employer's CoS planning and the applicant's submission timetable should allow for this requirement. If the evidence is not ready, do not state in the application that it has been obtained. Ask for advice on the lawful options and the correct timing rather than relying on a hoped-for result after submission.

For assistance through Skilled Worker application coordination, provide the intended route, application type, earlier permission and the qualification or test already held. Case-specific immigration advice must be supplied by an appropriately regulated or otherwise legally authorised adviser. Ask them to identify the accepted evidence route and any relevant transition or exemption. The conclusion should explain what is required for this person without presenting one test provider or one qualification as the universal answer.

Retain the final evidence reference and the basis on which it was accepted within the application record. This helps with later extensions or changes, when the person may need to show what was previously established and under which rules, rather than reconstructing the history from an old test-booking email.

Illustrative scenario

A candidate previously held permission under older language requirements. The adviser reviews the current application type and transitional provisions before deciding whether new evidence is needed.

Preparation checklist

  • Confirm the application category
  • Check the applicable level
  • Verify accepted evidence
  • Review previous-permission provisions

Frequently asked questions

Is B1 enough for every Skilled Worker application in 2026?

No. B2 is normally required for new applications, with a qualifying earlier Skilled Worker transitional position. Assess the individual's prior permission and application type.

Does an English-language interview satisfy the immigration requirement?

No. The applicant needs an accepted evidence route or exemption under the relevant rules, separate from the employer's assessment of communication skills.

Can any English test be used?

No. Where a SELT is required, confirm the approved provider, correct test, components and required level before booking.

Can an overseas English-taught degree be used without further assessment?

The official guidance requires the relevant Ecctis assessment for that evidence route. Check the precise qualification and supporting reference requirements.
