A practical starting point for working for yourself

A first client, a weekend business or a return to freelance work can create several administrative questions at once. Yudey helps turn those questions into an organised registration brief. Tell us what you do, how customers pay you and when the activity began. We use that picture to identify the information that needs checking before you choose the next step.

This service is designed around preparation and agreed registration support. It does not assume that every enquiry requires the same HMRC application. Someone who already completes Self Assessment may need a different route from a person who has never registered. We establish the proposed work and the responsible adviser before requesting detailed records or asking you to approve a submission.

Check the business and its starting position

We begin with the nature of your activity, the dates involved and any previous self-employment. Your business may sit alongside employment, operate through a platform or receive income from several customers. We flag questions about the relationship between these activities and the records needed to explain them. If employment status or overseas tax issues require separate advice, that is identified in the proposal.

A sole trader operates personally rather than through an incorporated company. Registration does not create the liability protection associated with a separate limited company. The official guidance also explains that registration requirements depend on the circumstances and that records matter from the start. [1] Our review helps you distinguish the business structure decision from the administrative steps that follow it.

Prepare the registration information

The agreed preparation can include a list of required details, clarification of the trading start date and a check of existing tax references. We highlight missing information instead of inserting estimates as though they were established facts. If a date is uncertain, we discuss what evidence might help, such as the first invoice, customer agreement or record of trading activity.

Government account access, identity evidence and personal references need an appropriate handling method. Do not send login credentials or identity documents through the initial enquiry form. Where agent authorisation or a particular official route is needed, we explain that step separately. Preparation of information and confirmation that HMRC has accepted a registration are different stages of the work.

Set up a workable record routine

The handover can identify the types of income and expense records your activity is likely to produce. For a consultant, this may mean invoices, subscriptions and travel evidence; for an online seller, platform statements, refunds and stock records may require attention. We help define a simple collection routine so that a later bookkeeping engagement starts with organised information.

We also distinguish money received from the profit that may ultimately be relevant to tax. A registration exercise is not a full calculation of your liability. VAT, employer obligations, digital reporting requirements and business licences are considered as possible follow-up questions where your facts make them relevant. Their assessment or implementation is included only where the written scope expressly says so.

What you receive and what remains separate

Your agreed deliverables can include the registration brief, an outstanding-information list, details of the supported submission route and a first-actions checklist. The handover identifies who will retain acknowledgements and who will deal with any subsequent HMRC correspondence. This makes it easier to decide whether you want continuing support after the initial engagement has ended.

Annual returns, ongoing bookkeeping, historical corrections and correspondence about an existing investigation are separate pieces of work unless specifically included. If your concern is already overdue, say so at the start and provide the relevant dates. We can assess the appropriate next step, but an enquiry or quotation does not extend an official deadline or mean that your matter has been accepted.

Agree the work before proceeding

Fees reflect your registration history, the information available and the support requested. The written proposal states the charge in pounds sterling, applicable VAT, payment terms and any separately priced advice. You can see whether the engagement ends at preparation, includes an agreed submission, or continues to a defined handover point. Any additional work is discussed before it is undertaken.

To begin, send a short description of your business, your approximate start date and whether you already use Self Assessment. Include one contact method and any important correspondence deadline. Those details allow a focused first response without collecting an unnecessary file of personal financial information before the scope has been agreed.

Your questions,

Specific answers about sole trader registration support.

Must I form a company to work for myself?

No. A sole trader and a limited company are different structures. We can clarify the registration question for your activity and identify when a separate comparison of liability, administration and tax considerations would be useful.

Can you help if I already have a tax reference?

Yes, the existing registration history is part of the initial assessment. Having a reference does not by itself establish which current steps are needed, so we check the position before proposing a route.

Does the service include my first tax return?

Only if the written proposal includes it. Registration support, bookkeeping and preparation of a tax return have different deliverables. The quotation explains the endpoint and any optional continuing work you may wish to consider.

Can I enquire before taking my first payment?

Yes. Tell us the proposed activity and expected start date. Early preparation can identify record requirements and questions to resolve, without treating a planned date or forecast income as a confirmed trading fact.

What if I started trading some time ago?

State the earliest relevant dates and any HMRC correspondence. The scope may need to cover historical registration or reporting issues separately. We will not assume that a standard new-business engagement resolves an existing overdue position.

How much does registration support cost?

We quote after understanding your activity and registration history. The proposal separates the professional support fee from any other work and explains VAT where applicable. Sending the enquiry itself does not commit you to paid services.
