Subscription renewals and cancellation disputes

A subscription dispute should start with the terms accepted at sign-up and the steps taken to cancel.

Jurisdiction: England and Wales.

A subscription dispute should start with the terms accepted at sign-up and the steps taken to cancel. A renewal charge may raise questions about information, consent, notice or an unsuccessful cancellation process.

Reconstruct the subscription timeline

Save the original offer, trial terms, price changes, renewal reminders and cancellation attempts. Record the account identifier and any confirmation number. A bank statement proves charging but may not show whether the contract was effectively ended.

Separate cancellation of the payment method from cancellation of the service agreement. Tell the provider precisely which charge is disputed and why.

Check the rules applicable on the relevant date

The government has published implementation material for a new subscription-contract regime. [1] Planned protections should be checked for commencement and scope before being presented as rights already applicable to an older transaction.

Distance-contract information may be relevant to the original purchase. A complaint chronology can show repeated failed cancellation attempts. Ask the trader for its record of consent and cancellation, including the version of terms it relies on, rather than accepting a current help page as proof of what the customer originally agreed.

Identify the subscription that generated the charge Match the bank entry to the account, plan and billing period concerned. A household may have several accounts with the same provider, or a service may be billed through an app store rather than directly. Record the account email and subscription identifier without sharing passwords. Check whether the charge relates to a trial conversion, scheduled renewal, price change or an additional purchase. The correct explanation can be obscured if every unfamiliar entry is described simply as an unauthorised subscription payment.

Preserve the offer as it appeared at sign-up, including the trial length, recurring price and minimum term. Keep the confirmation and any later plan changes. If the provider relies on a current help page, ask for the terms associated with the actual account and date of purchase. A redesigned cancellation screen may not demonstrate what the customer encountered earlier. Identify any mismatch between the advertised offer, checkout information and amount charged, giving the provider a defined discrepancy to investigate.

Distinguish cancellation from other account actions Record exactly what action was taken: cancelling renewal, pausing deliveries, downgrading a plan, deleting an account or stopping a payment instruction. These actions may have different effects. Save the wording displayed after each step and any confirmation sent. A screen saying that benefits continue until a particular date may be useful evidence of the intended end date. If the customer merely removed the app from a device, explain that honestly rather than describing it as a completed cancellation through the provider's process.

If a cancellation attempt failed, preserve the route taken and the point of failure. Screenshots of an error, a chat transcript or an email acknowledgement can support the account. Note whether a final confirmation step was available and whether it was completed. Ask the provider for its record of the request and any reason it says the subscription continued. Focus on the particular attempt instead of relying solely on general complaints that the service is difficult to leave.

Check the law by date rather than by headline The government's implementation response, updated on 2 April 2026, anticipates commencement of the new subscription regime in spring 2027 and explains that regulations are still required. That publication is not itself a commencement instrument. When assessing a disputed charge, check which provisions were actually in force and applicable to the contract at the relevant time. Planned reminder or renewal cooling-off protections should not be presented as automatically deciding a charge made before they apply. [1]

Existing contract, information and consumer-protection questions still need examination. For an online subscription, preserve the information about price, duration and termination provided when the agreement was made. The distance-contract guidance addresses those information requirements and distinguishes services and digital content. If a trial led to a paid period, show what the customer was told would happen and the point at which they tried to stop it. An adviser can then assess the actual terms and conduct without depending on an anticipated reform. [2]

Ask for a defined correction and final account Identify the charge disputed, the reason and the outcome sought. The customer may want future renewal stopped, a particular payment refunded or both. State those requests separately so a refund does not leave the unwanted contract running. If the provider offers credit, a pause or a different plan, consider whether that actually resolves the complaint. Keep the proposed terms and make the response clear. An offer of a cheaper subscription is not the same operational outcome as ending the arrangement on an identified date.

After a response, verify the account's status and the actual payment record. Keep confirmation of the end date and any refund reference. If further charges appear, connect them to the earlier cancellation evidence and ask for an explanation promptly. A payment-provider dispute may offer another route, but its effect on the underlying contract should be considered separately. Maintain one chronology and disclose any money recovered elsewhere. The completed record should show what was authorised, what was cancelled and what amount, if any, remains genuinely disputed.

Frequently asked questions

Does deleting a subscription app necessarily end the contract?

No. Identify the provider's cancellation process and preserve the completed request or confirmation, distinguishing app removal from a contractual decision communicated to the trader.

What evidence helps challenge a charge after a free trial?

Keep the trial offer, recurring-price information, conversion date and cancellation attempts, showing precisely what was disclosed and what the customer did.

Can the announced new subscription rules automatically decide an older renewal dispute?

No. Check commencement, scope and transaction dates; the government's implementation response describes anticipated protections rather than making every provision immediately applicable.

Should stopping future renewals and requesting a refund be stated separately?

Yes. They seek different outcomes, and a provider's response to one may leave the other unresolved unless both are clearly identified.

What should I verify after receiving subscription cancellation confirmation?

Check the recorded end date and later payment entries, retaining the confirmation and any refund reference to address a further charge accurately.
