Graduate route eligibility should be checked from the completed course, current permission and education sponsor’s reporting, not merely graduation plans. The current grant length changes for applications from 1 January 2027, with separate treatment for doctoral qualifications.
For non-doctoral applicants, current guidance states two years when applying by 31 December 2026 and eighteen months from 1 January 2027. Do not assume every course qualifies.
Confirm successful completion and the provider's report
The Graduate route depends on an eligible completed course, the required UK study and the applicant's current Student or Tier 4 permission. The education provider must have told the Home Office that the course was successfully completed. A final lecture, submitted dissertation or expected pass is not necessarily that confirmation. Ask the provider whether completion has been reported and keep the response with the application records. [1]
The applicant does not need to wait for a graduation ceremony or a printed certificate once the relevant successful completion has been reported and the other conditions are met. This distinction matters where a ceremony is scheduled after Student permission expires. Record the actual expiry date and resolve any uncertainty with the provider early, rather than treating the public graduation calendar as the immigration timetable. [1]
Check the application date and grant length
As verified on 8 September 2026, the published guidance provides a two-year Graduate grant for eligible non-doctoral applications made on or before 31 December 2026. For applications made on or after 1 January 2027, that period becomes eighteen months. A PhD or other doctoral qualification receives the separate three-year period. The change concerns the application date, so older descriptions promising two years to every future graduate are incomplete. [1]
Do not submit prematurely simply to fall before the change. The applicant must actually meet the eligibility conditions, including completion reporting and current permission. Equally, do not delay a ready application solely to attend a ceremony if that would affect eligibility or the applicable grant period. Keep a written timetable showing completion confirmation, permission expiry and the intended submission date.
Assess course eligibility and the place of application
The applicant must be in the UK when applying and hold the relevant current Student or Tier 4 permission. The course must be eligible and the required study in the UK must be satisfied. Not every short course, professional programme or overseas-delivered qualification leads to the Graduate route. Confirm the particular course and study history with the provider rather than assuming that any award from a British institution qualifies. [1]
Review any time spent studying abroad, changes of course or unusual completion arrangements where relevant. If the person has already left the UK or their permission has expired, obtain individual advice instead of assuming the online form can simply be submitted from anywhere. A visitor entry should not be treated as a substitute for the required Student status for the Graduate application.
Understand work, study and family conditions
The Graduate route permits work in most jobs, job seeking and self-employment, but it is not unrestricted in every respect; professional sportsperson work is excluded. Study is also limited to courses that are not eligible for Student permission, with any relevant ATAS requirement still needing review. Read the grant conditions and do not assume that a flexible work route automatically allows starting another full-time Student-eligible programme. [1]
Partners and children can apply only if they meet the relevant dependant conditions. Their permission is not automatically extended when the graduate receives a decision. Check each person's application and expiry separately. For employers, distinguish an approved Graduate grant from a pending application while Student conditions may still be relevant. The employer should complete the appropriate right-to-work assessment before changing the person's working arrangement.
Plan beyond the temporary Graduate period
A Graduate visa cannot be extended. Someone who wants to remain longer should assess another eligible route in time, such as sponsored employment where the role and applicant meet the rules. A job offer does not automatically establish Skilled Worker eligibility, and a future salary or sponsor licence should not be assumed. Use Changing from study to sponsored work to begin that assessment before the Graduate permission is close to expiry. [1]
Through Student application enquiry, request an appropriately regulated or otherwise legally authorised adviser for immigration questions within the confirmed service scope. Provide the current permission, course details, completion-report confirmation and intended date. Include any family applications and longer-term employment plan. The useful outcome is a lawful application timetable and an accurate understanding of the grant's conditions and duration, without promising settlement, a job or an extension that the Graduate route does not provide.
Illustrative scenario
A student completes an eligible course before the graduation ceremony. They check the sponsor’s completion report and application timing rather than waiting solely for the ceremony date.
Preparation checklist
- Confirm eligible completion
- Check sponsor reporting
- Review current permission
- Verify the rules for the application date
Frequently asked questions
Must I wait for the graduation ceremony to apply?
No. Once the provider has reported successful completion and the other requirements are met, the ceremony or printed certificate need not be awaited.
Will every Graduate application receive two years?
No. Eligible non-doctoral applications from 1 January 2027 receive eighteen months under current guidance; doctoral qualifications have a separate three-year period.
Can I apply for a Graduate visa from overseas?
The published route requires the applicant to be in the UK with the relevant current Student or Tier 4 permission.
Can the Graduate visa be extended?
No. Assess another eligible immigration route before expiry if the person wants to remain longer.
